A retail space has an electrical personality that has nothing to do with a house. Loads are lighting-heavy and run long hours, the tenant changes every few years and each one rearranges everything, and the landlord's base building was designed for an average tenant rather than yours. Most of the trouble we get called about in retail and office spaces traces back to one of those three facts.

Track and display lighting is the usual starting point. A store that switched from halogen track heads to LED has freed up a large amount of circuit capacity without anyone updating the panel schedule, which means there is now room for things the previous tenant could not have run. Conversely, a food tenant moving into a space last occupied by apparel is walking into a service that was never intended to carry hood equipment, refrigeration and cooking loads. That gap has to be measured before a lease commits anyone to anything.

In restaurant spaces we deal with the usual list: dedicated circuits for each piece of fixed equipment, receptacles that are GFCI protected where they need to be, the hood system's fan and light circuits and its interlock with the fire suppression shunt trip, walk-in cooler and freezer power with compressor circuits sized for the actual condensing unit, and the reality that a kitchen is a wet, hot, greasy environment that eats devices and covers. Signage is one of those areas where the code has specific requirements that nobody outside the trade knows about, and where we routinely find installations that predate anyone caring.
