Three Kinds of Dark, and What Each One Means
Start by looking at how much of the house is out, because the pattern points at the cause.
The entire property is dead
Check whether the neighbors are dark. If the whole street is out, it is a utility event and FPL restores it; report it through their outage line or website and watch the outage map. If the neighbors have power and you do not, walk to the main disconnect. In most Boca houses that is a main breaker in the garage panel or in an exterior enclosure on a side yard. If it has tripped, do not reset it yet. Read the section below on mains first. If it has not tripped and you still have nothing, the failure is at the meter, the service entrance conductors, or the utility drop or lateral to your house, and that is a two party problem: the utility owns up to the meter, we own from the meter into the house.
Half the house is dead
Rooms and circuits scattered across the house with no obvious pattern, or every circuit on one side of the panel, means you have lost one of the two 120 volt legs feeding the house. The cause is usually a failed main breaker, a burned lug on the service conductors, or a problem at the utility connection. The Generator Started, or It Did Not, and Nothing Happened

- The generator never started. Battery dead, fuel valve closed, propane tank empty, or the controller in the off position after a service visit. Check the controller display for a fault code and read it to us.
- The generator is running but the house is still dark. The automatic transfer switch did not transfer. That is either a control wiring problem, a failed transfer mechanism, or a utility sensing fault that thinks the grid is still up. - The generator runs, the house has power, then everything drops. Overload. The generator is undersized for what is trying to run, or the load shedding module is not working. Shut down the big loads, especially air conditioning and the pool heater, and it will usually stabilize.
- Utility came back but the house stayed on generator. The transfer switch did not return. That burns fuel and, more importantly, may indicate a problem with the utility side of the switch that needs attention before the next outage.
One warning that matters more than the others: if someone has connected a portable generator to the house through a dryer outlet or any receptacle without a transfer switch or interlock, disconnect it now. That arrangement backfeeds the utility lines and can electrocute a line worker restoring power on your street. It also energizes the meter and the service conductors from the wrong side, and we see melted meter sockets from it after every storm.
A Burning Smell Is Harder to Find in a Big House
In a compact house, the smell of overheated insulation leads you to the panel in a minute. In a sprawling single story Boca home with a guest wing, a cabana, an attached garage and a detached one, the source could be any of several panels or any of hundreds of boxes. The approach is the same but the scale is larger.
Walk the house with the smell as a guide. Check every panel you know about, and remember that older estate homes frequently have subpanels in laundry rooms, closets and pool equipment rooms that the current owner has never opened. Feel cover plates on switches and receptacles with the back of your hand. Their breakers are known for failing to trip under fault and for losing contact with the bus, which is precisely the failure that produces heat and noise. When we find one of these panels behind an emergency call, we stabilize it for the night if we can and replace it as soon as the permit is in hand, because putting a new breaker in a Stab-Lok panel is not a repair anyone can stand behind.
Sparking at a receptacle or a switch follows the same rule: stop using the device, turn off its circuit, and have it replaced. Leave it tripped until the weather passes. Resetting a GFCI repeatedly into a wet fault only wears out the device. If it will not hold once things dry out, we find the leak in the wiring and correct it.
Docks and boat lifts are a more serious matter, because a fault on a dock energizes the water around it. If a dock circuit trips during a storm, or if anyone reports a tingle when touching a railing, a ladder or the water, keep people and pets out of the water and away from the dock and shut off the dock feeder. The Main Breaker That Refuses to Reset
A tripped main is different from a tripped branch breaker, because the main is between the utility and everything else. To reset most mains you push the handle firmly to the full off position first and then to on. If it goes on and holds, note what was running when it tripped and call us in the morning. After the Storm: Masts, Meters and Downed Service Drops
Boca Raton took hits from Frances and Jeanne in 2004, Wilma in 2005 and Irma in 2017, and each one produced the same set of electrical problems at the point where the utility meets the house. That sequence is fixed and we cannot skip steps, but we can start the rebuild while the power is still off so the reconnection happens as soon as the utility reaches your street.
Flooded meter enclosures and flooded exterior panels are replaced, not dried. Water inside a meter socket corrodes the jaws that grip the meter, and a loose meter jaw is a heat source that gets worse with every load cycle. If your enclosure was under water, tell the utility before they reconnect, and tell us so we can be there for it.
The Barrier Island and When to Leave the House
The City of Boca Raton follows Palm Beach County's evacuation maps and specifically urges barrier island residents to leave during hurricanes and strong storms, in part because the city expects many of those buildings to lose power. If you are in an evacuation zone and ordered out, leave. No electrical problem in the house is worth staying for, and we are not going to be driving across the Palmetto Park Road or Spanish River bridges in a hurricane either.
Outside of a storm, the reasons to leave a house are simpler. Leave if you see smoke or flame anywhere. Leave if a burning smell is strong and you cannot find its source after turning off the main. Leave if you hear arcing inside a wall. Leave if there is standing water in a room that also has energized equipment in it and you cannot reach the main safely. Leave if a downed line is touching the house, the fence or the pool cage. In each case call 911 from outside and then call us. Everything else, including a dark house, a dead wing and a tripped generator, is uncomfortable but survivable from inside.
What to Do in the First Ten Minutes
