Standby Versus Portable: Two Different Tools

A standby generator is permanently installed outside the building, plumbed to a fuel source, and wired to a transfer switch that monitors utility power. When the utility fails, it starts on its own, usually within seconds, and it keeps running unattended for as long as fuel supplies it. A portable generator is a wheeled or carried unit you fuel, start and stop by hand, and connect to the building through either a set of extension cords or a properly installed inlet and transfer switch.

Standby systems cost more to install but require far less from the homeowner during an outage, run more circuits at once, and handle extended outages without anyone refueling at 2 a.m. in the rain. Portable units cost less up front, can be stored and only brought out when needed, and are a reasonable choice for a property that only needs to carry a refrigerator, some lighting and a few outlets for a day or two. The right answer depends on how long your outages typically run, how much of the building needs to stay powered, and whether anyone will reliably be home to manage a portable unit through a multi-day event.

There is also a practical middle ground worth mentioning: a smaller standby unit sized for essential circuits only, rather than the whole building. This gets you the hands-off convenience of automatic start and a real transfer switch without paying for the largest possible unit, and it is often the right fit for a townhome or a smaller commercial space where full-building coverage is not realistic. We size these the same careful way we size a whole-property system, just against a shorter list of circuits.

Sizing the Generator to the Load

Undersizing a generator is the single most common mistake we see corrected after the fact. A generator has to be sized not to what would be nice to run, but to what will actually be connected and starting at the same time, with headroom for the hardest-starting load on the system. Air conditioning compressors, well pumps and large motors draw a starting current several times higher than their running current for a fraction of a second, and a generator that is sized only for running watts will stall or shut down the instant that compressor kicks on.

We build the sizing around a load calculation rather than a guess. That means listing every circuit that will be connected to the backup system, noting the running watts for each, identifying the largest motor load and its starting surge, and deciding which loads run all the time versus which cycle on and off. A refrigerator, sump pump, well pump, garage door opener, a portion of lighting and a few dedicated outlets is a modest and common residential load. Adding central air conditioning roughly doubles or triples the required generator size, which is why whole-house systems are physically larger and cost more than partial-house systems. For a commercial property, the load calculation has to account for refrigeration, HVAC, life safety systems, point of sale equipment and anything else that cannot go dark, and it is worth doing that math with an electrician rather than sizing off a sales chart.

If an EV charging station is or will be part of the property, it belongs in the same conversation. A Level 2 charger is a significant, steady load, and deciding up front whether the generator needs to carry it during an outage, or whether it is acceptable to shed that circuit automatically when the system switches to backup power, changes the required generator size. Automatic Versus Manual Transfer Switches

The transfer switch is what physically moves your electrical system from utility power to generator power, and it is just as important as the generator itself. Its entire job is to make sure the generator and the utility can never be connected to the building's wiring at the same time.

An automatic transfer switch monitors utility voltage continuously. When it senses the utility has failed for more than a few seconds, it signals the generator to start, waits for it to reach stable voltage and frequency, then switches the load over automatically, all without anyone touching anything. When utility power returns and stabilizes, it switches back and lets the generator cool down before shutting off. This is standard equipment on standby systems and is what makes them work unattended.

A manual transfer switch does the same physical job of isolating the two power sources, but a person has to flip it by hand, and with a manual transfer switch you also have to start the generator yourself. It is common with portable generator setups because it is less expensive than an automatic system and gives you direct control, but it means someone has to be present and willing to go outside during the outage to start the equipment and throw the switch. Either type has to be installed so the two sources are mechanically or electrically interlocked, meaning it is physically impossible for both to feed the panel at once.

Why Backfeeding a Dryer Outlet Can Kill Someone

We have to address this directly because it still happens, and it is one of the most dangerous things a homeowner can do with a portable generator. Backfeeding means running a cable from a portable generator into a dryer outlet or another 240-volt receptacle in the house, which sends generator power backward through the home's wiring and into the main panel, without any transfer switch to isolate it from the utility service.

That power does not stop at your panel. It travels out through your service entrance, through the meter, and onto the utility's distribution line, where it can be stepped up in voltage by a nearby transformer working in reverse. A line that utility crews believe is dead because the substation feeding it is down can become energized at lethal voltage from a single homeowner's generator a block away, with no warning to the lineworker touching it. This is not a theoretical risk. Utility linemen have been killed by exactly this scenario, working on lines they had every reason to believe were safe.

The only safe way to connect a portable generator to a building's wiring is through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock kit that physically prevents the generator and the utility from ever being connected at the same time. If you already own a portable generator and have been running extension cords into the house, or if someone has ever suggested backfeeding through a dryer outlet as a shortcut, that is exactly the kind of setup we correct, and it is worth a call regardless of what else is on your list.

Fuel Options and What Drives the Choice

Standby generators typically run on natural gas or liquid propane, and the choice usually comes down to what is already available at the property. A home or building with an existing natural gas service can often tie the generator into that supply, which means it never needs refueling and will keep running as long as the gas utility is delivering, which is usually more reliable through a storm than electrical distribution lines. Propane requires an on-site tank, sized to the generator's consumption and the number of hours you want it able to run unattended, and it gives you fuel independence from any utility at all, which matters if you are in an area without gas service.

Portable generators most commonly run on gasoline, with some units available in propane or dual-fuel configurations. Gasoline is easy to find in normal times and hard to find in the days right before and after a hurricane, which is the exact window when you need it most. A dual-fuel portable unit that can run on a propane tank as a backup fuel source removes a lot of that uncertainty, and it is worth discussing when you are choosing equipment rather than after the storm has already come through.

Placement and Clearances

Where a standby generator sits matters for performance, safety and how much you will hear it running. Manufacturers specify minimum clearances from windows, doors and fresh air intakes, because these units exhaust combustion gases that should never have a path back into occupied space, and most also require clearance from combustible walls and a level, well-drained pad to sit on. In South Florida, we also plan placement around flood elevation, since a generator sitting where storm surge or heavy rain regularly pools is a generator that will fail exactly when you need it.

Sound matters more than people expect until they live next to the unit. Placing the generator away from bedroom windows and considering the neighbor's property line saves arguments later, and many municipalities and homeowner associations have their own setback and screening requirements on top of the manufacturer's minimums. We check both before we set the pad, not after.

Access for service is the piece people forget until the first maintenance visit. A generator boxed in by landscaping that has grown up around it, or set where a technician cannot open the enclosure panels without standing in a flower bed, turns a routine oil change into an unnecessary hassle every time. We plan clearance on all sides for opening panels and pulling the air filter and oil filter, not just the minimum the manufacturer requires for airflow, because that clearance gets used every single service visit for the life of the unit.

Permits and Inspection

Standby generator installation is permitted work in every jurisdiction we serve, and for good reason. The scope typically covers the electrical connection and transfer switch, the fuel line if propane or natural gas is involved, and the concrete or composite pad the unit sits on. An inspector verifies the transfer switch is correctly interlocked, the generator is bonded and grounded properly, clearances are met, and the fuel connection, where applicable, meets its own separate requirements. We handle the permit application and schedule the inspection as part of the installation rather than leaving that step to the homeowner, and we do not consider the job finished until it has passed.

Portable generator installations that include a permanently mounted inlet and transfer switch or interlock also require a permit, even though the generator itself rolls away when it is not in use. Skipping that step is common with DIY interlock kits bought online, and it is one of the more frequent code corrections we get called out for after the fact, usually once a home changes hands and the buyer's inspection flags it.

Commercial Buildings and Life Safety Loads

Multi-family buildings, hotels, assembly spaces and many commercial occupancies are required to keep certain systems powered during an outage regardless of whether the owner wants a generator at all: exit and emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, fire pumps where installed, and often at least one elevator. That mandatory portion is generally referred to as life safety or legally required standby power, and it is wired and transferred separately from the optional standby power that keeps the rest of the building's business operations running.

Maintenance That Actually Keeps a Generator Working

A generator that has not run since it was installed is a generator you cannot trust when the power actually goes out. Standby units are built to run a short self-test cycle automatically on a schedule, exercising the engine and the transfer switch without connecting to your building's load, and that feature should stay enabled rather than switched off because the noise bothers someone.

Beyond the self-test, oil and filter changes on a running schedule, a battery that is tested rather than assumed to be good, and an annual check of the transfer switch, the fuel system and the cooling system catch most of the failures that would otherwise show up mid-storm. Portable units need fuel system attention too, since gasoline left sitting in a carburetor over months of storage is one of the most common reasons a portable generator will not start when it is finally needed. If your generator has sat untouched since last hurricane season, having it checked before the next one starts is worth more than most other storm preparation you could do that week.

Salt air is a maintenance factor here too, the same as it is for any outdoor electrical equipment in this part of the state. Enclosures, hardware and battery terminals on a coastal or near-coastal property corrode faster than the same equipment would inland, and a maintenance visit is also a chance to catch corrosion at connections before it turns into a starting failure or a control fault. A generator that starts fine on its weekly test but hesitates or throws a fault code under real load is telling you it needs attention now, not after the next outage proves the point.
