Aluminum Wiring Remediation
Aluminum wiring remediation in South Florida: copper pigtails with approved connectors, CO/ALR devices, panel terminations, permits and insurance.
Aluminum wiring remediation is the work of making the solid aluminum 15 and 20 amp branch circuits in a 1960s or 1970s house safe to keep using, by repairing every point where that aluminum conductor lands on a screw, a lug, or another wire. The calls come from homeowners in Hollywood, Plantation, Davie, Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines who have just been told by a home inspector, an underwriter, or a buyer's agent that the wiring in the house is a problem they have to deal with.
This page explains what is physically happening inside those connections, which repair methods are genuinely accepted and which ones are marketing, and what we look at in a house before we can price the job. It is a detailed subject and there is a lot of bad information about it, so we are going to be specific.
Why solid aluminum ended up in these houses, and where the trouble really is
Copper prices spiked in the mid 1960s, and for roughly eight years builders across South Florida wired ordinary lighting and receptacle circuits with solid aluminum conductor instead. The alloy used in that era was formulated for utility distribution, not for the repeated tightening and thermal cycling that happens at a device screw inside a wall box. Broward County was in the middle of an enormous residential build during exactly those years, which is why so much of our housing stock west of Federal Highway carries it.
The critical thing to understand is that the wire itself, sitting inside a wall, is not the hazard. A run of aluminum conductor from a panel to a bedroom box will carry current for another century without complaint. Every failure we open up is at a termination: a receptacle screw, a switch screw, a wire splice under a twist-on connector, a lug in the panel, the wire leads on a ceiling fixture. That is where the repair has to happen, and that is why aluminum wiring remediation is priced by the number of connections in the house rather than by square footage.
The four mechanisms that destroy an aluminum termination
Creep, or cold flow
Aluminum under sustained mechanical pressure slowly deforms and flows out from under the pressure. Tighten a screw onto an aluminum conductor and the metal squeezes sideways over months and years. The screw does not loosen; the wire gets thinner where the screw sits. Clamping force drops, contact area shrinks, and resistance at that junction climbs. Copper resists this far better, which is why the same terminal design works fine on a copper circuit.
Differential thermal expansion
Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature considerably more than the steel screw and the brass terminal holding it. Every time the circuit warms under load and cools when the load drops, the connection works against itself. In a South Florida house where air conditioning runs most of the year and attic temperatures swing hard, that cycle happens thousands of times a season. Each cycle is trivial; the cumulative effect is a connection that has walked itself loose.
Oxidation
This is the one people get wrong. Copper oxide still conducts reasonably well, so a slightly tarnished copper connection keeps working. Aluminum oxide is essentially an insulator, and it forms on a fresh aluminum surface almost immediately on exposure to air. As the mechanical connection loosens from creep and cycling, air reaches the interface, oxide grows in the gap, resistance rises further, the joint runs hotter, and heat accelerates oxide growth. That feedback loop is what turns a slow degradation into a sudden failure.
Galvanic corrosion, made worse by our humidity
Aluminum in contact with brass or steel in the presence of moisture forms a galvanic cell, and the aluminum is the metal that gives up material. Our year-round humidity, and salt-laden air anywhere near the barrier islands and the Intracoastal, feed that reaction inside boxes that are not sealed against anything. A receptacle in a Sunny Isles Beach condo or a Golden Beach house is working in a more aggressive environment than the same device twenty miles inland.
What a connection in trouble looks and smells like
Some of these you will notice yourself. Others only show up when a device is pulled out of the wall.
- A warm cover plate. A receptacle or switch plate that is noticeably warm to the touch when the circuit is loaded is a connection dissipating heat it should not be dissipating.
- Lights that flicker or dim on one circuit when a motor starts elsewhere in the house, or that pulse for no obvious reason.
- An outlet that works intermittently, or a switch that has to be jiggled. Intermittent is worse than dead, because it means the joint is opening and closing under load and arcing each time.
- A sharp, acrid smell of hot thermoplastic near a device, sometimes described as a fishy or chemical odor. That is device body and conductor insulation cooking. If you smell it, stop using the circuit and call us.
- Brown or black staining around the terminal screws, a device body that has gone tan or bubbled, or a wire whose insulation has shrunk back from the screw.
- Crackling or sizzling audible at a device. That is arcing, and it is a fire in progress in slow motion.
None of these require the whole house to be bad. A single overheating termination is enough to start a fire in a wall cavity, and a house has hundreds of terminations. The repair methods that are actually accepted
There are three approaches that federal consumer product safety research and the trade generally recognize, plus outright replacement. They are not equivalent, and they do not cost the same.
Crimped copper pigtails using a cold weld connector
The COPALUM system uses a special metal sleeve applied with a high-force hydraulic tool that compresses the aluminum branch conductor and a short copper pigtail together hard enough to cold weld them into a single mass of metal, then seals the joint in an insulating sleeve. There is no screw, no clamping force to relax, and no path for air to reach the interface, so none of the four failure mechanisms above apply to the finished joint. The device in the box then sees copper only.
The catch is practical. The tooling is controlled by the manufacturer and released only to authorized installers, the connectors are physically bulky, and availability of both the tool and the parts has become genuinely difficult over the years. When a house is a candidate for it and it can be sourced, it is the most permanent pigtail repair there is. We will tell you honestly whether it is realistically obtainable for your job rather than promising it and substituting something else at the last minute.
Copper pigtails using a listed set screw lug connector
The AlumiConn style connector is a small insulated body with separate ports, each with its own set screw, so the aluminum conductor and the copper pigtail are clamped independently and never touch each other directly. The ports are prefilled with an antioxidant compound that excludes air from the conductor surface, and each screw is torqued to the manufacturer's specification with a torque screwdriver rather than tightened by feel. Separating the two metals into their own ports removes the galvanic couple, and the antioxidant plus correct torque addresses oxidation and creep.
This is the method most remediation jobs in South Florida actually use. It is available, it is repeatable, and when it is installed to spec it holds. The word "torque" is doing real work in that sentence: this connector fails when it is installed by someone who guesses at tightness, and it is the single most common thing we find done wrong on a house that was supposedly already remediated.
CO/ALR devices
Receptacles and switches marked CO/ALR are built with terminal designs and materials qualified for direct connection of aluminum conductor. Replacing every ordinary receptacle and switch in the house with a CO/ALR device is a legitimate partial approach, and it is often used in combination with pigtailing rather than instead of it.
The limitation is coverage. CO/ALR devices exist for standard 15 and 20 amp receptacles and toggle switches, and that is largely it. There is no CO/ALR dimmer, no CO/ALR smart switch, no CO/ALR ceiling fixture, and no CO/ALR way to splice two aluminum conductors together in a junction box. Any box with a splice, any light fixture, any hardwired appliance, and any place you want a modern control device still has to be handled another way. A house treated only with CO/ALR devices is partially remediated, and an underwriter reading a report may or may not accept that.
Replacing the branch circuits with copper
Pulling out the aluminum branch circuits and installing new copper conductors, boxes and devices ends the conversation permanently. It costs more up front than pigtailing and it disturbs the house, but it removes the defect instead of managing it, it lets us lay out circuits the way a modern house should be arranged, and it produces a permitted, inspected result that no future buyer or carrier will argue with. What is not a repair, regardless of who sold it to you
Twisting an aluminum conductor and a copper pigtail together under a twist-on wire connector is not an accepted permanent repair, including with the connectors marketed in purple packaging for mixed metals. The joint still depends on spring pressure against a metal that creeps, air still reaches the interface, and the two metals are still in direct contact. Federal safety guidance has been explicit that this method does not resolve the hazard. We find it constantly in houses where someone did a weekend of "aluminum wiring repair" before a sale.
Devices stamped only AL/CU from the original era are also not a fix. That marking predates the CO/ALR qualification and those devices were found to fail in service, which is why the CO/ALR designation exists at all. If a house was "updated" by installing AL/CU marked devices, it was updated with the product that failed.
Backstabbed connections, where the conductor is pushed into a spring clip on the back of a device rather than wrapped under a screw, are the worst possible arrangement for aluminum. The contact area is tiny and the clamping force is a small spring. Any of these we find get corrected as part of the job.
Pigtailing or full replacement: how we decide with you
The honest answer is that it depends on numbers and on your plans for the house, not on a philosophy.
Pigtailing tends to be the right call when the house is otherwise in reasonable shape, the boxes are accessible and large enough, the panel is modern or is being replaced anyway, the conductors have not been damaged by previous overheating, and you want a documented, permitted remediation without opening walls. It is also the practical answer when a closing is pending and the scope has to be defined and finished.
Replacement moves ahead when we find multiple already-burned terminations, when conductors have been nicked or broken off short at devices by repeated re-tightening, when the boxes are shallow metal boxes with no room for connectors, when the house is getting a kitchen or full renovation anyway, or when you are also adding load that the existing circuit layout cannot support. In many houses the deciding factor is that the aluminum problem arrives alongside an obsolete panel, and once you are replacing the panel, the arithmetic on the rest of the system changes.
The places people forget
A quote that only counts receptacles and switches is not a whole remediation. Every one of these is a termination on aluminum, and a complete aluminum wiring remediation covers all of them:
- The panel itself. Every branch conductor lands on a breaker screw or the neutral bar. Those terminations creep and oxidize like any other, and the panel is where the heat has the most fuel around it. Torquing and treating those, or replacing the panel outright, is part of the job.
- Ceiling and wall fixtures. Every light in the house is a splice inside a canopy, often in the hottest part of a ceiling cavity.
- Junction boxes with splices. Attic and crawlspace splices, splices behind removed fixtures, and boxes buried above a dropped ceiling.
- Hardwired equipment. Bath fans, range hoods, garbage disposals, doorbell transformers, attic fans, and older hardwired smoke alarms.
- Multi-wire branch circuits where two circuits share a neutral. A loose shared neutral on aluminum does not just fail the circuit, it can put unbalanced voltage on connected equipment.
Box fill, shallow boxes, and the trim work nobody mentions
Adding a connector and a pigtail to every device adds volume inside the box. The older shallow metal boxes common in 1960s block construction were sized for a conductor, a device, and nothing else. When the connectors will not fit, the answer is a box extension ring or replacing the box, and replacing a box that is nailed to a stud behind finished drywall means opening and patching the wall.
We tell people this before we start, because it is the part of an aluminum wiring remediation that surprises homeowners. The electrical work can be clean and complete and the house can still need a painter afterward. When we walk a house we count how many boxes are likely to need attention so that the estimate reflects the real job.
"It has been fine for forty years" is not evidence
This comes up on almost every visit, and it deserves a direct answer. The reason the argument fails is that the failure mode is cumulative and per-connection, not house-wide. Creep, cycling and oxide growth run continuously in the background, and the condition of a joint after four decades is worse than it was at year ten even though nothing visible has changed. The house has not been passing a test each year; it has been advancing toward the point where one of several hundred terminations crosses a threshold.
It is also a sampling problem. Nothing has failed yet that you have noticed. Federal safety research comparing homes with pre-1972 aluminum branch wiring against copper-wired homes found the aluminum homes far more likely to have at least one connection already at fire hazard conditions, and those conditions were largely invisible from outside the wall. The first symptom in many houses is smoke.
The other half of the answer is that the load on these circuits has changed. A 1968 bedroom circuit fed a lamp and a clock radio. Today it feeds a window unit, a computer, several chargers, and a space heater in January. The terminations are older and the current through them is higher.

Homeowners often hear "aluminum wiring" and panic about the aluminum service entrance cable feeding their meter, or the aluminum feeder running to a garage subpanel, or the aluminum conductors on a range or dryer circuit. Those are a different material and a different situation.
Modern larger aluminum conductors use a different alloy family developed specifically to resist creep, they are stranded rather than solid, and they terminate in lugs designed and listed for them, torqued to a specified value with antioxidant compound applied. Utilities and electricians use aluminum for service and feeder conductors every day across South Florida because it is lighter, less expensive, and completely reliable when terminated correctly. The aluminum wiring remediation discussed on this page is about solid aluminum on 15 and 20 amp branch circuits. If someone tells you your whole house needs rewiring because the service entrance cable is aluminum, get another opinion.
Insurance, four point inspections and selling the house
In South Florida this is usually what forces the issue. Carriers writing homeowner policies on older houses generally require a four point inspection covering roof, plumbing, HVAC and electrical, and the electrical section asks directly about branch circuit wiring type and about specific obsolete panel brands. Aluminum branch wiring shows up on that report as a checked box, and what happens next depends on the carrier.
Some decline to quote at all. Some will write the policy only with documented remediation. Some accept CO/ALR devices, others want pigtailing throughout and want to see the permit. Renewal is where a lot of people get caught, because a policy that has been in force for years can be non-renewed after a routine inspection with no change to the house at all.
On a sale, aluminum wiring shows up in the inspection report and becomes a negotiation item, and the buyer's lender may care as well because the buyer needs to be able to bind coverage before closing. Getting remediation done, permitted, and finaled before the house is listed is almost always cheaper than getting it done under a deadline with a contract in hand. When a closing is already scheduled and the clock is running, tell us that on the first call so we can talk about sequencing.
What we inspect before we quote
We do not price this job from a photo or a phone description, because the variables that drive the number are all inside boxes. On a site visit we:
- Verify it is actually aluminum, and confirm whether it is solid aluminum branch conductor rather than copper-clad aluminum, which looks similar at a glance and behaves differently. Conductor markings on the jacket usually tell us, and pulling a device confirms it.
- Determine how much of the house it covers. Plenty of homes are mixed. A 1970 house that had a kitchen redone in 1995 may have copper in the kitchen and laundry and aluminum everywhere else. Additions are almost always copper.
- Open a representative sample of devices in different areas and on different circuits, looking for heat damage, oxide, previous twist-on repairs, backstabbed conductors, and how much slack there is on the conductors.
- Count devices, fixtures, junction boxes and appliance connections, because that count is the job.
- Check box types and depths to estimate how many will need extension rings or replacement, and therefore how much drywall work follows.
- Open and inspect the panel, looking at conductor terminations, evidence of heating on the bus, and whether the panel itself is one of the obsolete types that needs to go regardless. If it is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, we will say so, and our article on those panels explains why.
- Look at attic access and ceiling fixture layout, since that determines how the fixture splices get reached.
- Ask what you plan to do with the house, because remediating a house you are selling in ninety days and remediating a house you are renovating next year lead to different recommendations.
Permit, inspection, and the paper you want to keep
Aluminum wiring remediation is permitted electrical work, and the permit is what turns the job into something an underwriter and a title company will accept. Keep the permit number, the final inspection approval, and our written scope describing the method used and the number of connections treated. That package is what you hand an insurance agent or a buyer, and it is worth far more than a receipt that says "electrical work" on it. Work that commonly gets done at the same time
Once boxes and the panel are open, several things become efficient to handle together. Arc fault and ground fault protection is the big one, since a house from this era typically has neither and a remediation is the natural moment to add it. Grounding is another: many houses of this vintage have two prong receptacles on ungrounded circuits, and the plan for those should be settled during the same visit rather than discovered later.
