At night we can usually isolate which section has failed, disconnect it safely, and get temporary power to what has to run. Locating and replacing a buried conductor is daytime work, done in conduit with pull points so it does not happen again.

Lightning Over Open Land

Davie's pastures, arenas and open lots have far less around them to take a lightning strike than a dense suburb does, and summer afternoons here produce plenty of strikes. Burning Smells and Warm Walls in the House

Away from the barn, Davie's houses are a wide mix, from 1950s and 1960s ranch houses on acreage to the subdivisions that went up through the 1970s and 1980s in Forest Ridge, Pine Island Ridge and the subdivisions along Pine Island Road and Nob Hill Road. In the older ranch houses, the burning smell more often comes from a splice in the attic, a fuse block or a first-generation breaker panel that has run at capacity for half a century, or cloth insulation that has cracked and let two conductors touch. Breakers That Trip and Will Not Hold

A breaker is a switch that opens itself when current exceeds its rating or when it detects a fault. When one trips, the correct response depends on how it trips.

  • Trips after running a while, resets and holds when something is unplugged. Overload. Not an emergency tonight, but a sign the circuit is carrying more than it should. A barn circuit that started life feeding two lights and now runs six fans and a water heater is the classic case.
  • Trips the instant it is reset, with a snap. Short circuit or ground fault. Leave it off. Repeated resets push fault current through the same damaged point, whether that is a chewed cable, a wet box, a failed motor, or a nicked feeder.
  • Trips when a motor starts. Pumps, compressors and lift motors draw a heavy inrush.   • A ground fault or arc fault device trips repeatedly. It is almost always reporting something real. On a property with a barn, a pool and a wash rack, that something is usually water or a failing motor.

Two panel brands deserve a separate mention because they fail the other way. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a documented history of breakers that do not trip on a fault.
