The failure mode is worth understanding because it explains why the fix is what it is. Aluminum does several inconvenient things at a terminal. It creeps, meaning it slowly deforms and flows out from under the pressure of a tightened screw, so a connection that was tight on the day of inspection loosens over years. One more caution. Home inspection reports and insurance questionnaires often say only that aluminum wiring is present, without specifying where. That single line has cost people sales and policies over conductors that were never a concern. Remediation Methods That Actually Hold Up

Twisting a copper pigtail to an aluminum conductor under a standard wire nut multiplies the number of dissimilar metal joints in a box while doing nothing about creep. Even the twist-on connector that was specifically marketed for aluminum to copper splices was tested by CPSC and was not recommended as a permanent repair. CO/ALR devices are legitimate for what they are, but they only cover receptacles and switches. They do nothing for a ceiling fixture, a smoke alarm, a junction splice or the terminations inside the panel, which is why swapping outlets alone leaves most of the house untouched.
