Sign circuits typically run on a timer or photocell so they activate automatically at dusk and shut off at a set time or at dawn, and a failed timer or photocell produces the same symptom as a failed sign component: a sign that either never comes on or never goes off. We check the whole circuit, the timer or photocell, the disconnect, the transformer or driver, and the wiring to the sign itself, rather than assuming the sign is the problem just because that is the visible symptom.

Retail stores and offices generally cannot have their electrical systems down during business hours without real cost, lost sales for a retailer, lost productivity for an office, and both categories are more open to scheduling electrical work outside their normal hours than a business that operates around the clock. We do a fair amount of retail and office electrical work in the evening, overnight, or on days the business is closed, specifically because that minimizes the disruption to the operation.
Overnight and after-hours work requires its own planning: coordinating building access outside normal hours, sometimes with property management or building security, making sure the space is left secure and properly closed up when the work is done, and being realistic about what can actually be completed in a single overnight window versus what needs to be phased across more than one visit. We plan that with the business owner or manager up front rather than discovering access or scheduling problems once the crew is already on site.

Office break rooms carry a surprising amount of electrical load for a small space, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee equipment, sometimes a dishwasher, and these loads benefit from the same dedicated circuit approach a residential kitchen needs, rather than sharing a circuit with general office receptacles. Conference rooms increasingly need power and data drops built into the room itself for laptops, video conferencing equipment and presentation screens, not just outlets along the perimeter wall that were adequate for an office designed decades ago.
As offices have shifted toward more video conferencing and shared screen use, we get more requests to add power and data capacity to conference rooms that were never designed with that kind of equipment load in mind. That is usually a straightforward addition once we know what equipment the room needs to support, and it is worth doing properly with dedicated circuits rather than running extension cords across a conference room floor as a permanent solution.
Break room appliances also tend to accumulate over time without anyone tracking total load, a microwave added here, a second refrigerator added there, until a circuit that was fine for the original setup is now shared by more equipment than it was ever sized for. If a break room circuit trips whenever more than one appliance runs at once, that is usually a sizing problem rather than a sign anything is actually failing, and it is worth fixing properly with a dedicated circuit rather than asking staff to remember not to use the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time.
Multi-Tenant Retail Centers and Shared Systems
A store or office in a strip center or a multi-tenant office building shares the property with other tenants, and its electrical service sometimes shares infrastructure with them too, a common meter room, shared site lighting, or a house panel serving common areas that no individual tenant is directly responsible for. When a problem shows up inside one tenant's space, the cause is not always inside that space. It can trace back to shared equipment that affects several tenants at once.

Planning an Electrical Upgrade Around a Renovation
Retailers and office tenants periodically renovate or refresh a space, new fixtures, a reconfigured layout, updated finishes, and electrical work is usually part of that even when it is not the headline item on the project list. Moving a wall means relocating outlets and switches. New lighting fixtures need circuits sized to match, not just physically wired in place of whatever was there before. A reconfigured layout changes where power and data need to land for workstations, registers, or display fixtures.

Modern office layouts change more often than the electrical infrastructure underneath them was originally designed to accommodate, and a reconfiguration from private offices to an open floor plan, or the reverse, usually means power and data need to land in different places than the walls that used to define them. Furniture-fed power, delivered through power poles or whips dropped from an accessible ceiling grid rather than through wall outlets, gives an open office the flexibility to move workstations without opening a wall every time the layout changes.
Floor boxes and poke-through devices are another option where furniture-fed power from above is not practical, bringing power and data up through the floor at a fixed point rather than across open ceiling space. Either approach needs to be planned around how a business actually expects the floor to be used, since a layout that seems final on move-in day is rarely final two or three years later. When an open plan reconfiguration is extensive enough to add new circuits, change panel loading meaningfully, or affect life safety systems, it can trigger a new permit even in a space that is not otherwise being renovated, which is worth knowing before a business assumes a furniture rearrangement is purely a facilities matter.
Occupancy Sensors and Lighting Control Strategy
Occupancy and vacancy sensors fall into a few different sensing technologies, and picking the wrong one for a space is a common reason a sensor annoys the people working under it instead of quietly saving energy. Passive infrared sensors detect motion in a direct line of sight and work well in open areas but can miss someone sitting still at a desk behind a partition. Ultrasonic sensors detect motion by sound reflection and pick up activity around corners and behind obstructions better, which suits private offices and restrooms, but can be more sensitive to activity outside the intended space, like hallway traffic through a glass wall. Dual-technology sensors combine both and are often the more reliable choice for spaces where either method alone tends to cause complaints.
Sensitivity and time-delay settings matter as much as the sensor technology itself, and a sensor left at its factory default setting is a common source of lights shutting off on someone who is still in the room, or staying on long after everyone has left. We adjust time delay and sensitivity during commissioning rather than leaving default settings in place, and we return to make adjustments if a business reports a sensor behaving in a way that is disrupting the space rather than helping it. Daylight-responsive dimming, which reduces electric light output as natural light through windows increases, works well paired with occupancy sensing in perimeter offices and conference rooms with significant window area, cutting energy use further without anyone in the room having to touch a switch.
Coordinating Data and AV Power
Audio-visual equipment in conference rooms and common areas, displays, amplifiers, video conferencing hardware, and the rack equipment that drives it, benefits from dedicated circuits separated from general lighting and receptacle loads, since AV equipment is sensitive to the same voltage noise that point of sale and network equipment are. A conference room display and video bar sharing a circuit with a coffee maker in an adjacent break room is a setup that works fine until the coffee maker's startup draw causes a visible flicker or a dropped connection during a client call.
We coordinate directly with a low-voltage or AV contractor on a build-out or major renovation, since power and data pathways often run through the same ceiling space or wall cavity, and planning both trades' rough-in together avoids a conflict discovered only when someone tries to pull cable through a space an electrical conduit already fills. Isolated ground receptacles, which route grounding through a separate conductor back to the panel rather than sharing the standard grounding path, are sometimes specified for sensitive AV or server rack equipment, and we install them per the equipment manufacturer's requirements rather than defaulting to standard grounding on a rack that specifically calls for isolation.
